Jim Killam serves as managing editor for the Wycliffe Global Alliance. He has worked more than 40 years in journalism and communications — first in daily newspapers, then teaching university journalism and for the past 12 years in Christian ministry. He has reported hundreds of news stories from more than a dozen countries, and co-authored five books, including “Go Tell It: How and Why to Report God’s Stories in Words, Photos and Videos” (Moody Publishers). He and his wife, Lauren, have three married children and six grandchildren. They live in Illinois, where Jim also reports stories of hope both for their church and their local rescue mission.
I grew up in the Moody Bookstore at LaSalle and Chicago Avenue. I read the paperbacks, the Christian comics, and cut my doctrinal teeth on Sailor Sam and Uncle Charlie (and later, on Founders Week messages). I learned to understand myself as a young Christian by reading Campus Life (cover to cover). And my doctoral dissertation at the University of Kentucky explored the ways Christian colleges and universities were, in a sense, made real and durable by whether or not they made use of a national media voice, whether it be in print, on the radio or by other media. I have taught thousands of young people in their teens and twenties to fall in love with the power of words and fear the implications of words used as weapons. I am a journalist at heart, having felt a call from God to wed the force of logical investigation with the persuasion of narratives told in sensory depth. I was a general assignment reporter in greater Chicago and greater Atlanta before entering academia and I’ve launched many of my students into the world as Christ-following journalists. But a good number of my former students use words well in public relations, ministry, missions and even in legal practice.
